Sunglasses for Children to Protect the Eyes

by Melanie

Protecting children’s eyes from the sun is best done by using brimmed hats and children’s sunglasses. Sunglasses are important for everyone to protect against the damage from UV and UV-B rays. Since children will spend a lot of time playing outside, it is very important to protect their eyes.

Children’s sunglasses will protect a child’s eyes from the harmful and damaging effects of the sun. Get your children in the habit of wearing sunglasses early to help  ensure they will wear them as they get a little older. Children’s sunglasses are available  in sizes to fit infants, toddlers and older children.

Since there is potential for damage year round, sunglasses should be worn all year. The harmful rays, which are highest  between 10 am and 2 pm, are also reflected off water, sand, snow and even cement pavement. Whether your child is participating is summer or winter sports or just playing outside, it is important to protect their eyes. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, sun damage to the eyes may include an increased risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and of course, cancer.

When selecting sunglasses for children choose sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. The sunglasses should be clearly marked with a rating of  “UV400″ or “100% UV rays and UV-B rays Protection”.

The best style of sunglasses are wrap-around sunglasses.  If you cannot find wraparound sunglasses for children, other styles are fine just use a hat to increase protection. You also want to look for polycarbonate lens. The color of the lens is not important, just be sure that the lenses block 100%  UV and UV-B rays.
